Sewell On the Go has taken a proactive approach to its underground fuel tanks at Pocklington in York by having them re-tightened.
Over a three week period, Eurotank Environmental carried out the tank re-tightening process on five steel, single-skin tanks at the Yorkshire site.
Zac Botham, Head of Retail Compliance at Sewell On the Go, said: “Following a review of all of the tanks across our estate, we started a programme of improvement, targeting those that were both single-skinned and over a certain age. The aim of this was to lower the overall risk, repair any corrosion or weak spots and give us ongoing peace of mind.”
Eurotank first removed the tank lids and high pressure jet washed the inside of the tanks before performing a visual inspection. The tanks were found with the expected levels of corrosion for tanks of that age, and were pressure and vacuum tested, with all tanks passing those tests.
As part of the re-tightening process, the floors of the tanks were prepared and lined with three layers of chopped strand matt and resin to prevent further corrosion and extend the life of the tank. Deterioration was found on the old steel pipework tank lid fittings, which were not suitable for re-fitting, so these were also replaced. The tanks have steel vent and suction lines and plastic fill points so Eurotank also advised that the pipework should be considered for replacement in the future, and upgrade both the suction and vent lines to plastic.
All pipework was replaced and pressure tested prior to re-commissioning of the pipework and pumps.
