Eurotank finds huge crack around centre of a fuel tank

Eurotank sees rise in tank integrity issues

Eurotank is urging retailers to have the integrity of their underground fuel tanks checked amid a rise in tank and pipework failures.

Eurotank Environmental is experiencing a growing number of callouts to investigate a variety of tank issues as the UK forecourt network’s fuel tanks continue to age, with problems ranging from minor water ingress to complete tank failures.

Jack Aplin, Eurotank’s Group Sales Director, said: “Fewer retailers are putting new tanks in the ground so tank issues are going to become more and more prevalent as the years go on.

“Our advice to retailers is to find out what their risk is. How old are the tanks? How old is the pipework? What are they made of – GRP or steel? Are they lined and how long ago?”

Exact numbers are unknown but Eurotank believes there’s a significantly large percentage of single-skin steel tanks in operation nationwide and these are at highest risk of corrosion and failure.

“Double-skin tanks were not mandatory until the 1990s so any site built before then will most likely have single-skin steel tanks,” adds Jack.

“Steel tanks generally fail due to spot corrosion from either the outside or inside but failed tanks can nearly always be repaired, often without a full re-line. We can advise on the best course of action.”

Over the past couple of months, Eurotank’s tank lining teams have installed everything from Fastliner to Lifeliner Lite to upgrade tanks and bring peace of mind to customers.
