Baffle-cut project to maximise fuel storage

A forecourt in Cornwall has upgraded its tanks and improved fuel storage capacity, thanks to specialist works by Eurotank Environmental.

The site’s pumps were fed by nine tanks, five of which were part of two much larger vessels that had been partitioned with baffles to create multi-compartment tanks.

Eddie Fataciune, Eurotank’s Head of Operations, said that the site was selling four grades of fuel – petrol, diesel and premium versions of both – so the multiple compartments were not required and were adding unnecessary complexity for maintenance and monitoring of the tanks.

“Removing the baffles has increased the usable single-product volume and simplified the fuel storage on site,” said Eddie. “Having one larger tank reduces pipework complexity and maintenance requirements, and tank monitoring is improved because fewer individual compartments simplifies leak detection, wet stock management and general tank maintenance.”

Tanks one, two and three were made into one vessel with two baffle cuts, creating one 27,200-litre tank for premium diesel. Tank eight and nine were also made into a bigger tank, creating one 45,460-litre vessel for diesel.

All tanks were re-tightened as part of the project.
